CONSULTATION AT HOME
  • Individualized, private, confidential, about one hour, approximately $90

CLINICAL EVALUATION AT A HOSPITAL or PHYSICIAN VISIT
  • Request referral to an Occupational Therapist for an "ADL Evaluation including Community Mobility" from an OT with driver screening skills.
  • Insurance may cover the evaluation, 1-4 hours.

BEHIND THE WHEEL DRIVING EVALUATION:
  • To practice use of adaptations such as hand controls or special seating.

  • Cost is near $500, insurance may cover cost.

CLASSROOM SETTING:
  • Group program.
  • May lead to deduction in insurance rate
  • 2-6 hours:

DRIVER SCHOOLS:
  • To practice driving and update driving techniques
  • Some schools have experience with people with disabilities and injuries.
  • Expect about 2 hours for $80 to $150.
      - - See Driving Schools in phone book. Find school that has a high percent of adult clients (vs. teenagers) and if they do remedial training or teach new adult drivers, depending on your need.


DMV BEHIND THE WHEEL TEST:
  • To attain authorization to drive.
  • Does not address problems that are not obvious at the time of the evaluation. For instance, some people have fluctuations in driving ability due to a diagnosis such as multiple sclerosis, diabetes, or TIAs. Also, some peoples’ skills decrease with fatigue, distraction, anger or stress.
  • Your doctor is required to inform the DMV if you have had a lapse of consciousness or other specific diagnoses.

  • National Hwy Traffic Safety Administration research shows that most people self-limit their driving when educated about safe driving skills.
  • People with poor insight into the consequences of their limitations may need intervention from outside sources such alternative transportation, greater responsibility by the caregiver and restrictions that are more definite.
